Which Way is Up?

Too often we encounter printers whose trays are covered either in ‘stickies’ or worse, permanent marker, indicating which way the paper should be loaded. Often these markings are in sight of or placed immediately over an icon which conveys that very information.

The icon on the left indicates the printed page will be (in relation to the paper in the tray) top up, face up. The second icon from the left would indicate the printed page will be face down, top up. The third icon from the left indicates the page will be face down, top down. Finally, the fourth icon indicates the printed page will appear face up, top down (in relation to the paper in the tray).

In the very unlikely event there is no icon on the tray, you can always mark the top right corner of a blank page and print something on that page to prove the orientation.

This icon is also used on scanners and document feeder to indicate the orientation required:
